CoAstal encounters collection
From the Printshop’s beginnings in the outport of St. Michael’s to the bustling harbour in downtown St. John’s, artists from near and far have been drawn to the lands and waters of Newfoundland/ Ktaqmkuk for inspiration for their prints. Images of shorelines, rocky coasts, beaches, and harbours are frequently seen throughout St. Michael’s Printshop’s archive. Living in Newfoundland and Labrador, we are shaped by our diverse coastal experiences at the edge of the North Atlantic. As a fundraising initiative, St. Michael’s Printshop is inviting artists to submit a proposal to produce a limited edition of 15 prints to be included in a new thematic portfolio titled coastal encounters.
Project Description
Three selected artists will each produce an edition of 15 prints for St. Michael’s Printshop; additionally, the artists will print two Artist Proofs to be included in the SMP archive. Each artist may also print two Artist Proofs for themselves. Each artist will receive an honorarium of $1500 to produce the edition, as well as a stipend for paper and materials of up to $300. In addition to this honorarium, each artist will be given complimentary rental of the Printshop for one year (a value of $1440). The paper to be used for the editions will be sized 22” x 30”, and the prints should be valued at a minimum of $700. Due to grant limitations, this opportunity is open only to artists currently working in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Timeline
• May 15, 2026 – Proposal deadline
• May 31, 2026 – Successful applicants notified
• November 1, 2026 -- Deadline for completed editions to be delivered to SMP
• Half of the honorarium will be disbursed to successful artists at the start of the commission, with the remainder to be disbursed upon completion of the edition and its delivery to St. Michael’s Printshop.
