Description 

For the 4th edition of Ink Fest, St. Michael’s Printshop is excited to host a Festival Writer-in-Residence! We welcome Newfoundland & Labrador-based writers to apply for this inaugural position. 

 

SMP will publish the writing in a zine, including festival photography, and on our website. The zine will be distributed to the public at our post-festival exhibition this fall! SMP is interested in engaging a diverse audience in conversations around printmaking, and the prose-style writing should be accessible to a wide audience.

The project scope includes:​

  1. Attending festival events between Oct 1-4 including: The Don Wright Scholar Exhibition, Litho Exhibition & Panel talk, Film Screening, SMP Open House, Live Steamroller Printing & dropping into workshops.​​

             a.Please note that several Ink Fest events are not physically accessible due to SMP’s                  location on the second floor of an old building, reachable only by a flight of stairs.

  2. Writing a 1000-word piece on the festival. The writing must be submitted by Nov 6th,        2026 and be in line with SMP's code of conduct.

              


Compensation: 

The writer will be paid a fee of $1000 for a 1000-word piece and receive a complimentary 1-year membership to St. Michael’s Printshop. Payment will be made following the receipt of the work and an invoice.  


Eligibility:

  • Writers at all career stages, including emerging and self-taught writers, are encouraged to apply.

  • The writer must be a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador.

  • The writer does not need prior printmaking knowledge.

  • Writing collectives are welcome to apply, though please note the $1000 fee is all inclusive.

  • SMP encourages applications from members of under-represented communities, including racialized persons: Black, Indigenous, People(s) of Colour (BIPOC); persons with disabilities, persons living with mental illness, and 2SLGBTQIA+ persons.

Evaluation:
While assessing we consider these aspects of the applications: â€‹

  • Clarity of writing 

  • Artistic merit

  • Impact (artistic and career growth)  

​

The jury is asked to reflect on their implicit biases and prioritize members of under-represented communities. The jury assesses applications based on criteria listed above and within a competitive context.

  2. Statement of Interest (150 words max) - tell us about why you are interested in writing about Ink Fest.

  3. 2 samples of previous writing (500 words each max) in PDF format.
