St. Michael’s Printshop (SMP) exists to develop and grow printmaking as a participatory and accessible art form. SMP provides the facilities and opportunity for visual artists from across the province, Canada, and internationally, as well as for its local community, to learn and engage in the art of printmaking. One of the province’s few artist-run centres and the only artist-run printmaking studio, SMP promotes and continues to push the boundaries of printmaking as a contemporary art form. SMP provides space and specialized equipment for artists to work, educational opportunities through scholarships and workshops, and residencies through its visiting artist program.

This summer St Michael’s Printshop is looking to hire a student or young person (under 30 years of age, see Canada Summer Jobs eligibility below) as a Studio Assistant.

The primary role of the Studio Assistant will be to assist artists and visitors in navigating the resources at the printshop, and they will learn how to carry out the daily operations of a non-profit artist-run print studio. The studio assistant will be under the direct supervision of senior staff at St Michael’s Printshop, the Executive Director (ED) and Communications and Administrative Assistant (CAA).

The Studio Assistant will:

  • Provide tours of the printshop to the general public.

  • Provide orientations of the print studio to new members and visiting artists.

  • Provide technical assistance to visiting artists.

  • Prepare for and give workshops.

  • Oversee Open Studio events.

  • Perform basic maintenance of the equipment and supplies in the studio.

  • Manage inventory of materials and supplies.

  • Additional tasks further into the position will encourage a more self-directed path and allow the youth to pursue specialized knowledge of their choice with help from senior staff so they acquire career related skills.

Supervision will include health and safety training at the start of the position as well as a full briefing on our anti-harassment and anti-oppression policies. The Studio Assistant will participate in weekly team meetings with staff and will receive one on one mentoring for the duration of their position.

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate will be in the process of completing, or have a BFA with a focus in printmaking or equivalent experience in printmaking.

  • SMP provides facilities for Intaglio, relief, lithography, monoprint, and screenprinting. Ideally the applicant will have knowledge/experience in at least two of the above mentioned processes.

  • Experience working with the public and strong communication skills. This job entails working with visiting artists and members of the printshop and public, so good interpersonal skills are required.

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative with regards to shop cleanliness and maintenance
