Printmaking courses for everyone at amazing prices.

Thanks to funding from CEDP (Culture Economic Development Program), St. Michael’s Printshop is proud to offer a series of 4 Introductory Printmaking Workshops, including Relief, Lithography, Intaglio, and Monotype & Chine Collé. If you are interested in trying printmaking for the first time, learning a new printmaking process to add to your artistic roster, or you need a refresher course, then this workshop series is for you.

St. Michael’s Printshop has a goal to share the intriguing history and technology involved in printmaking with the St. John’s community and artists at all stages in their career. Each course is $125 for members or $155 for non-members (price includes a membership). Space is limited, and pre-registration is required – register through Eventbrite using the buttons below.

Intro to Relief Printmaking with Jason Wells

Dates: 4 Mondays – September 24th to October 15th 2018
Time: 6 to 9pm
Location: St. Michael’s Printshop, 72 Harbour Drive (upstairs)
Cost: $125 for members, $155 for non-members (price includes a one-year membership) + tax

Relief printmaking is a family of printing methods where a printing block like linoleum or wood is carved into. When ink is rolled over the surface, anywhere that’s been carved will not get inked so when the block is printed, the carved areas remain white (ink free) while the printing areas will have colour.Participants will learn how to carve images using wood and linoleum. They will learn reduction and jigsaw techniques. They will learn how to work safely with harsh chemicals and substances and gain general knowledge about all materials involved. Materials included! Bring sketches, pictures, and ideas. Space for 8 participants. Beginners welcome.

Intro to Lithography with Mike Connolly

Dates: 4 Tuesdays – September 25th to October 16th 2018
Time: 6 to 9pm
Location: St. Michael’s Printshop, 72 Harbour Drive (upstairs)
Cost: $125 for members, $155 for non-members (price includes a one-year membership) + tax

Lithography is a method of printing based on the knowledge that oil and water don’t mix. A drawing is made on and printed from a lithographic limestone.

Participants will learn how to prepare, draw on, etch, and print a lithographic limestone. They will learn how to work safely with the harsh chemicals and substances involved, and will gain an understanding and knowledge about lithographic chemistry, materials, and techniques. Materials included! Bring sketches, pictures, and ideas. Space for 4 participants. Beginners welcome.

Intro to Intaglio with Mike Connolly

Dates: 4 Tuesdays – October 30th to November 20th, 2018
Time: 6 to 9pm
Location: St. Michael’s Printshop, 72 Harbour Drive (upstairs)
Cost: $125 for members, $155 for non-members (price includes a one-year membership) + tax

Intaglio, is the printmaking technique in which an image is carved, scraped, or etched into metal or plexiglass with an etching needle. The lines in the metal or glass is where the ink is held and then transferred onto paper in the printing process.Participants will learn and try drypoint, etching, and aquatint techniques. They will develop ability in colour mixing, wiping the plate, working safely with harsh chemicals and substances, and gain general knowledge about all materials involved, and the fine-art applications particular to the medium. Materials included! Bring sketches, pictures, and ideas. Space for 6 participants. Beginners welcome.

Intro to Monotype and Chine Collé with Jason Wells

Dates: 4 Mondays – October 29th to November 19th, 2018
Time: 6 to 9pm
Location: St. Michael’s Printshop, 72 Harbour Drive (upstairs)
Cost: $125 for members, $155 for non-members (price includes a one-year membership) + tax

Monotypes are made by drawing on glass or a metal plate with ink or oil paint. The drawing is pressed by hand onto paper or is printed on an etching press. Chine-collé is a special printmaking technique in which an image is transferred to a delicate paper that is glued to a heavy paper in the printing process.Participants will learn how to make unique prints using ink and paint on plexiglass. They will learn how to incorporate plants and cut-out paper into their prints. As well, participants will learn the basics of chine collé by experimenting with Japanese papers, incorporating colour, pattern, and texture into their prints. They will learn how to work safely with harsh chemicals and substances and gain general knowledge about all materials and processes involved. Materials included! Bring sketches, pictures, and ideas. Space for 8 participants. Beginners welcome.
